Today in Military History: Jan. 28, 1915, creation of Coast Guard

Seminole, a 188-foot, 845-ton steamer, was constructed by the Columbian Iron Works in Baltimore, MD for $141,000. She was commissioned in 1900 and saw service through 1934.

On January 28, 1915,  President Wilson signs into law the “Act to Create the Coast Guard”. The legislation, passed by Congress on January 20, united the Life-Saving Service and Revenue Cutter Service to form the Coast Guard.
